Scar revision is a type of cosmetic surgery often used to enhance the appearance of scars or remove them altogether. Scar revision can help to improve the disfigurement often caused by scars, and it can often restore some or all of the skin's function.
Several different types of scars can be improved by a scar revision treatment. Revision treatments can vary, depending on the type and severity of the scar in question. Components of scar revision can include steroid therapy, cryotherapy, pressure therapy and surgery.
Steroid therapy for scar revision typically involves the injection of steroids into the scar itself. This is often used to treat keloid scars, and can help relieve the uncomfortable symptoms that often occur in conjunction with these scars. Steroid injections can sometimes make the scar smaller and thinner. Cryotherapy may be used in an attempt to freeze off the scar tissue, and pressure therapy typically involves wearing a tight garment over the area.
Dermabrasion is often used for scar revision. Sometimes, scar tissue can simply be carefully excised from the skin. Skin grafts and skin flaps may also be used to replace scar tissue with normal functioning skin. Tissue expansion techniques, such as the Z-plasty, are often used to loosen skin around contracture scars, which can occur with larger skin injuries.
