Revisional eyelid surgery, also known as revision eyelid surgery, is a procedure that is performed a few months or years after an initial blepharoplasty. The revision involves removing fat and skin that may have been missed during the initial procedure or that occurs some time after the first surgery due to aging.
The second blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery deals with the deposits of fatty tissues and excessive skin that may remain after the first surgery or that may accumulate in a few years post surgery, with aging. The fatty tissues typically accumulate near the nose on the upper part of the eyelid. The procedure may be performed using scalpel or with laser beams.
The results of the revisional eyelid surgery are an improved and younger appearance. The recovery period after a revisional surgery is similar to the initial eyelid surgery and involves five to seven days of downtime.
The risks of revisional eyelid surgery include infection and blood clots and in addition to the traditional blepharoplasty, the revision surgery may cause lower eyelid drooping.
There are less invasive alternatives to avoid a second eyelid surgery. Plastic surgeons may recommend lipolysis, which is a procedure that eliminates remaining fatty tissues without requiring new incisions. The fat is melted and eliminated by the body.
