Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is plastic surgery that can be either essential or cosmetic in nature. Both the upper and lower eyelid can be corrected by this surgery in order to improve function and appearance. If the procedure is performed for cosmetic purposes, the patient has to finance the procedure. The procedure is covered by insurance companies when it is carried out to improve vision. Eyelid surgery should not be carried out on patients with medical disorders like circulatory disorders, eye diseases such as glaucoma, dry eyes, diabetes and high blood pressure.
With age comes not so desirable changes in appearance such as excess skin on both the upper and lower eyelids. This can also adversely affect vision. In addition, droopy eyelids and bags under the eyes detract from a person's looks. Eyelid surgery can correct these issue to make the patient look alert and young. However, a patient should be aware that an eyelid surgery can't eliminate crow's feet, wrinkles or dark circles.
Every surgery has some risks associated with it. An eyelid surgery can cause irritated and dry eyes, an inability to blink or close the eyes while sleeping, changes in vision and scarring.
