Are your
nipples oversized, inverted, or somehow deformed? If so, nipple surgery can
offer a solution. It is not uncommon for some men and women to have nipples
that bulge out too much, turn in, are misshaped, are different sizes, or do not
have the appearance of a “normal” nipple.
As it
specifically relates to nipple inversion, there are three grades, and those
with grade 3 nipples often deal with skin rashes, infections, and hygiene
problems. Correcting this problem is relatively easy, and can be as simple as
pulling the nipple out and permanently supporting it with a loop. This will
require a local anesthetic.
However, in
some cases, particularly for those with grade 3 nipples, the surgeon may have
to detach the milk ducts in order to make the correction, and this will likely
require general anesthesia. In such instances, breastfeeding likely will not be
an option—this is not so for a simple pull-and-loop.
Despite
initial success, there are times when the nipples re-invert. Should this occur,
a nipple prosthesis is an option, and it works by supporting and propping the
nipple up and out. This option should only be considered if previous attempts
failed, as some bodies will reject the implant or suffer from infection.
With nipple
reduction, an incision is made around the nipple and it is pulled back. The excess
is removed and the nipple is placed back into position before being sutured. A
deformed nipple is little more complicated, as it requires the surgeon to
reshape the nipple. Possible complications other than infection include tissue
damage, bleeding and an allergic reaction to anesthesia. Additional risks are
scars, pigmentation problems, loss of sensation and nipples that appear
different.
