Breast reduction is a form of breast reconstruction that is used for women with large breasts. These women are often suffering from neck and back pain from the weight of their heavy breasts. Their breasts may also seem out of proportion to the rest of the body. The surgery results in lighter, more proportionate breasts.
Breast reduction involves removing excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. After the patient has been anesthetized, an incision is then made in the breast. The most common incision is an anchor shape, although circular and keyhole incisions may also be used. The nipple, which in most cases is still attached to nerve endings and the blood supply, is relocated to a higher position. Excess tissue and skin is removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped. The incision is then closed with sutures in the layers of tissue and the skin. A drain is often inserted under the skin to prevent fluid from collecting.
The recovery period for a breast reduction is usually about one to two weeks before returning to work and normal activities. More strenuous activities should be avoided for about six weeks. Risks include infection, changes in breast sensitivity and interference with breast milk production.
