Keloids are a type of scar that is built up higher than the level of the skin. The top of the scar is harder than the surrounding surface. In some cases, the top is smooth and may be pink or purple in color. They are often irregular shaped and enlarge progressively. Treatment for keloids include surgical removal, laser procedures, silicone sheets that are worn on the affected area, cryotherapy or the freezing of the keloids with liquid nitrogen or the use of cortisone injections to the surrounding area. Other treatments for keloids include radiation, fluorouracil and interferion. Each case is unique and treatment is determined by location and severity.
